John has extensive experience in tax and business law. Prior to joining the firm, John practiced in the Chicago office of the international law firm Mayer Brown.
John regularly takes a leading role in structuring and tax planning for transactions. He has been the principal tax lawyer on many merger, acquisition and joint venture transactions. John leads our firm’s federal, state and foreign tax representation of individuals, private equity and venture capital funds, businesses, accounting firms, tax-exempt organizations, publicly-traded financial services firms, real estate investment trusts, tenancy-in-common sponsors and professional sports teams.
John’s business practice includes general representation of closely-held businesses, investors, lenders, venture and private equity funds, employees, borrowers and individuals. This representation includes drafting and negotiating documentation for acquisitions, mergers, joint ventures and partnerships, investment funds, investments, loans, license arrangements, and closely-held businesses. He also designs and documents stock option plans and other equity and equity-based compensation arrangements, and advises on fundraising, restructurings, reorganizations, employment and other contractual, governance and legal matters.
John is a member of the tax sections of The Florida Bar and American Bar Association and business law section of the American Bar Association. He serves on the Board of Directors and is past President for the Association for Corporate Growth (ACG), Tampa Bay Chapter.
