Dr. Johann Pitz is a partner at Vossius & Partner Patentanwälte Rechtsanwälte mbB in Munich. He founded and developed the firm’s legal patent department and focuses his practice on Intellectual Property Law and Litigation. His work centers on patent litigation, invalidity actions, and opposition proceedings before German civil courts, the Federal Patent Court, the European Patent Office, and the Federal Supreme Court.
Admitted as an attorney-at-law in 1991, Dr. Pitz represents German and international clients in complex patent disputes. He works closely with European Patent Attorneys in multidisciplinary teams covering a wide range of technical fields. His experience includes cross-border litigation and infringement matters involving technologies such as erythropoietin and clinical trials, implant and catheter technologies, coffee pad systems and contributory infringement, nano-dispersions used as fuel additives, and methotrexate.
Dr. Pitz has been repeatedly included in the Best Lawyers ranking since 2009 and is recommended by Who’s Who Legal for intellectual property work in Germany. He is active in several professional organizations, including GRUR, LES, AIPPI, AIPLA, and VPP, and serves as vice-president of the Union-IP Litigation Commission. He is also listed as a mediator in the registry of the Munich Bar Association.
A frequent speaker at intellectual property conferences in Germany and internationally, Dr. Pitz has authored and co-authored numerous publications on patent enforcement and Intellectual Property Law. His work includes contributions to Beck’s practitioner handbooks “Patentverletzungsverfahren” and “Patent Litigation in Germany, Japan and the United States,” the “Münchener Anwaltshandbuch,” and the patent law commentary Fitzner/Lutz/Bodewig.
Before being admitted to the bar, Dr. Pitz passed his Second State Examination in Munich. He then worked as a research fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Patent, Copyright and Competition Law, where he completed his doctoral degree (Dr. iur.). During this time, he also served as an assistant at the chair of Prof. Schricker at Ludwig-Maximilian University in Munich.
