Jim earned both his B.Sc. (Computer Science, 1982) and his LL.B. (1985) at the University of Western Ontario. After successfully completing the bar admission course he was admitted to the Law Society of Upper Canada in 1987. Since then, he has practiced at Siskinds LLP and has been a partner since 1992.
Jim is a litigator who represents both plaintiffs and defendants in personal injury and insurance cases. He has appeared before all levels of court in Ontario and has had cases reviewed by the Supreme Court of Canada. He has appeared in the Federal Court and the Federal Court of Appeal. He has also appeared before various tribunals including FSCO, WSIAT and CPP.
Jim was a member of the Siskinds LLP management committee from 1998 to 2011. He is currently the practice group leader for the Personal Injury Group. He is a past President of the Middlesex Law Association (2000) and a past National and Provincial Council member for the Canadian and Ontario Bar Association.
Jim is Certified as a Specialist in Civil Litigation by the Law Society of Upper Canada. He has been selected by his peers to be included in Best Lawyers in Canada. Jim also has been awarded a peer review rating of “BV Distinguished” by Martindale-Hubbell indicating a very high rating in both legal ability and ethical standards. He is an author, lecturer and presenter on various legal topics including civil procedure, personal injury and insurance law, trial advocacy and tort law.
When he is not at work, Jim and his wife Sheila combine their efforts to raise their four children. He both coaches (Level 1 Certified) and plays basketball and has coached (Level 2 Certified) soccer for over 14 years. The Mays family enjoys skiing in the winter and spending as much time as possible, year round, on Georgian Bay.
Jim is a past member of the Board of Directors for the Brain Injury Association of London and Region. He was the original editor of their Services Directory. He was a member and chair of the Annual Brain Injury Conference. Jim is also the founding co-chair of the Siskinds LLP annual “Golf Play Day” held to support the work of the healthcare professionals at the Children’s Hospital in London.
