Jeffrey Guise is a Palo Alto, California patent attorney and intellectual property strategist with more than 30 years of experience advising companies on the development, management, and protection of global intellectual property portfolios. As part of Young Basile Hanlon & MacFarlane PC, Dr. Guise works with clients across the biotechnology and life sciences industries, including pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical device, and medical technology companies.
With a Ph.D. in molecular biology and immunology, Dr. Guise counsels start-up, emerging growth, and middle-market businesses on patent portfolio strategy, IP protection, and commercialization matters. His practice includes patent preparation and prosecution, IP acquisition and licensing, due diligence, freedom-to-operate analyses, non-infringement and validity opinions, and invention records management planning. He also advises clients on IP-related transactions and portfolio assessments involving domestic and international intellectual property rights.
Dr. Guise’s technical background allows him to work closely with innovators developing complex technologies in biotechnology and life sciences practice areas. His experience includes biotechnology, medical diagnostics, pharmaceuticals, immunology, genetic engineering, genomics, proteomics, bioinformatics software, agricultural biotechnology, and electronic hardware systems.
In addition to portfolio counseling and patent strategy, Dr. Guise has represented clients in intellectual property disputes and enforcement matters. His experience includes litigation support, pre-trial and trial proceedings, interference proceedings, and litigation counseling. He is admitted to practice before several U.S. district courts, courts of appeals, and the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
