Biography

At Hecker Fink, Jeffrey Then's practice has focused on white collar criminal defense and government investigations, internal investigations, and civil litigation matters. Jeffrey maintains an active pro bono practice in asylum, civil rights, and criminal matters. Some of his most recent pro bono matters include filing an amicus brief in the U.S. Supreme Court on behalf of Black Women Law Scholars arguing that race-conscious admissions programs are constitutional; representing an incarcerated individual before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit in his suit against various state officials for violating his religious freedom; and representing two clients seeking asylum due to persecution they faced in their home countries based on their sexual orientation—achieving positive resolutions in both cases including affirmatively winning asylum for one client. Jeffrey’s pro bono practice also includes representing indigent criminal defendants in both federal and state criminal prosecutions.

Jeffrey joined the firm after completing a clerkship for the Honorable Analisa Torres of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. Prior to his clerkship, Jeffrey was an associate at Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP.

Jeffrey received his law degree in 2017 from Columbia Law School, where he was a James Kent and Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar. While at Columbia, Jeffrey was a staff editor of the Columbia Human Rights Law Journal and an articles editor of the Jailhouse Lawyer’s Manual. He received his B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania.
