Biography

Jeffrey Cooper did not take the straight path to becoming a trial lawyer. The early years brought challenges and setbacks that tested him, but also sharpened his instincts and competitive drive. Over time, he realized he could use those skills to stand with people who don’t have the resources or power to take on hospitals, healthcare institutions, corporations, and insurance companies, and to make sure their side of the story is heard.

That focus has defined his work for more than twenty years. Jeffrey tries medical malpractice and serious injury cases throughout Connecticut, from complex “mid-tier” malpractice claims to high-value matters with millions at stake. His work includes surgical errors, birth injuries, delayed diagnoses, wrongful death, motor vehicle collisions, and product liability claims. Results include $2.0 million in a cancer failed diagnosis case, $2.5 million in a drunk-driving motorcycle case, $4.2 million in a surgical case resulting in stroke, and $6.5 million in a birth injury wrongful death case.

Cooper runs a selective practice, taking on cases where his direct involvement from investigation through trial can make a difference. He does not advertise heavily or operate a high-volume operation. Many come by referral when the facts are challenging, the medicine is contested, or the stakes are high, and in each, he builds the case early and prepares it relentlessly to win.

Q&A

I represent people in medical malpractice and serious injury cases, birth injuries, surgical mistakes, delayed diagnoses, wrongful death, and major accident cases. I keep my caseload manageable so I can work each case myself, from the first meeting to the last day in court. I’m not in the business of churning files; if I take your case, it’s because I think I can make a difference in it.

Most people ask, “How much am I going to get?” It’s a hard question to answer early on because so many factors go into valuing a case, the strength of the evidence, the injuries, the damages, and how a jury might see it. What I can say is that my job is to maximize your recovery within the facts and the law, and I’ll be honest with you about what’s realistic as the case develops.

A client with cerebral palsy — non-verbal, unable to communicate pain — was in the hospital when an IV line leaked anticonvulsant drugs into his tissue. It burned his skin and muscle badly before anyone realized what was happening. He couldn’t call out for help. We built the case around what the staff should have seen and done. It was a stark reminder of why the most vulnerable patients need the most vigilance.

The medicine is complicated, the stakes are high, and the defense rarely admits fault. You have to understand the details well enough to cross-examine experts on their own ground, and then explain those same details in plain English to a jury. Getting that balance right — without losing accuracy or clarity — is the hardest part.

In my first year, I took a pedestrian injury case other lawyers had passed on. The insurer had written it off. I saw a way forward, tried it, and the jury came back with more than the policy limits. That win showed me how much difference it can make when you’re willing to do the work and take a case all the way.

I like working with my hands — carpentry, fixing and building things, working in the yard, and gardening. I play sports when I can — basketball with my son, golf, pickleball, and tennis. Most of all, I enjoy time with my family and my partner, and finding new experiences to share with them.

I don’t advertise on TV or run a high-volume shop. Most of my work comes from referrals by lawyers or clients who know how I handle cases. I prepare every case like it’s going to trial, because that’s how you get the best results — whether you settle or go to verdict.
