Jean-François Bellis is the managing partner of Van Bael & Bellis.
In 1975, he started his practice in Brussels, specialising in EU competition and EU trade law. From 1979 - 1980, he served as Legal Secretary to Lord Mackenzie Stuart at the Court of Justice of the European Communities (now Court of Justice of the European Union) in Luxembourg. In 1986, he co-founded Van Bael & Bellis with Ivo Van Bael.
Jean-François has extensive litigation experience in EU competition and trade cases, representing clients before the European Commission, the EU Courts and in national proceedings.
EU Competition Law
In the field of competition law, Jean-François assists international clients in cases at both the EU and the national level. He regularly advises on all aspects of competition law with particular expertise in a broad range of antitrust issues, including cartels, dominant market positions, mergers, distribution and licensing.
EU and International Trade Law
In the field of international trade law, Jean-François’ practice focuses on trade defence instruments. He regularly assists clients in anti-dumping cases, EU countervailing and safeguard investigations and in "trade barrier” proceedings. In recognition of his efforts in this area, he was appointed to the WTO panel by the WTO Director-General.
In April 2014, Jean-François was honoured by Chambers & Partners for his “Outstanding Contribution to the Legal Profession”. Previously, in February 2011, the Global Competition Review (GCR) granted him a “Lifetime Achievement Award” in recognition of his longstanding experience in competition law. He has also been named by Best Lawyers as a “Lawyer of the Year” for 2016, 2015-2014, 2013 and 2010.
He regularly lectures and writes on competition law and trade law matters.

Jean-François Bellis has written numerous books and articles in the fields of competition and trade law and has spoken on both of these subjects at several international conferences and seminars. Van Bael & Bellis authors the leading treatises “Competition Law of the European Community” (fifth edition, Kluwer, 2010) and “EU Anti-Dumping and Other Trade Defence Instruments” (fifth edition, Kluwer, 2011), of which Jean-François is a key contributor. Both books are considered standard works of reference in their respective fields.
Jean-François Bellis is a professor of EU competition law at the Institute of European Studies of the University of Brussels.
