Biography

Jason LaFond is board certified in Civil Appellate Law and focuses his practice on appellate advocacy, commercial litigation, and administrative and regulatory law. Based in Austin, Texas, he represents clients before the Supreme Court of Texas, intermediate state appellate courts, and federal appellate courts in complex, high-stakes disputes.

Jason has handled more than 50 appeals and authored hundreds of appellate briefs involving constitutional law, statutory interpretation, sovereign immunity, regulatory disputes, and other significant legal issues. His practice includes appellate representation at every stage of litigation, from preserving error and developing dispositive motions in trial courts to briefing and oral argument on appeal.

In addition to his appellate work, Jason regularly advises trial teams in complex commercial litigation and “bet-the-company” matters. He works closely with clients and litigation counsel to develop legal strategy, address challenging procedural and substantive issues, and position cases for success in both trial and appellate courts.

Jason’s background in public law and government-related litigation informs his work in matters involving state and federal agencies, political subdivisions, and regulatory issues. He has represented private companies and governmental entities in disputes involving administrative law, constitutional claims, agency action, and questions of governmental authority.

Before joining Scott Douglass & McConnico LLP, Jason served as Assistant Solicitor General of Texas, representing the State of Texas and its officers in significant appellate matters, including proceedings before the U.S. Supreme Court. He also served as a senior legal advisor at The University of Texas at Austin, where he advised the University on a broad range of state and federal legal issues during a period of substantial regulatory and institutional change.

Earlier in his career, Jason practiced with the appellate and strategic motions group of an international law firm and completed federal judicial clerkships in the Southern District of New York and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.

Before attending law school, Jason worked for the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Ways and Means. He earned his law degree, magna cum laude, from the University of Michigan Law School.

Jason’s recognized practice areas include Administrative / Regulatory Law, Appellate Practice, and Commercial Litigation.
