Jim Young is a Dallas, Texas attorney, arbitrator, mediator, and corporate general counsel with approximately four decades of experience addressing business, corporate, securities, transactional, and insurance-related matters. As a qualified arbitrator and mediator, he supports the use of alternative dispute resolution, including arbitration and mediation, to help businesses address disputes outside of traditional litigation.
Mr. Young began his legal career with Cox & Smith, now Dykema, in San Antonio, and Mayor, Day & Caldwell, now Hunton Andrews Kurth, in Houston. He worked with the corporate, securities, and transactional practice groups at both firms. In 1990, he became General Counsel for Acap Corporation in Houston, a publicly held group of insurance companies involved in acquiring life, accident, and health insurance companies and blocks of insurance policies in force. He later served as Associate General Counsel for the Conseco Companies, a Fortune 500 insurance and financial services organization.
Throughout his career, Mr. Young has served as general counsel or corporate counsel for organizations undergoing significant business changes, including the HealthMarkets Companies, Saxon Publishers, Inc., Southwestern Life Holdings, Inc., the Transport Companies, and Statesman National Life Insurance Company. His work has included advising businesses through turnarounds, corporate transactions, legal department management, and a range of issues arising throughout the business life cycle.
As solo general counsel for emerging businesses and as the head of legal departments for larger organizations, Mr. Young has worked closely with senior management teams on legal, operational, and business matters. This experience allows him to evaluate legal challenges in the context of a client’s business objectives and to assist with negotiations, dispute resolution, risk management, and corporate decision-making.
Mr. Young currently serves as an adjunct professor at Collin College, where he teaches law and government subjects. He has also served as an adjunct professor of law at Texas A&M University School of Law and as an adjunct professor in the undergraduate paralegal studies program at Texas Wesleyan University.
