Biography

Attorney James ("Jay") Berryman is a Director at Suisman Shapiro with extensive experience representing injured workers and individuals seeking Social Security Disability benefits. He focuses his practice on Workers’ Compensation Law and Social Security Disability claims, handling matters under both the Connecticut Workers’ Compensation Act and the Federal Longshore and Harbor Workers’ Compensation Act. A graduate of the University of Notre Dame and the Columbus School of Law, Attorney Berryman is admitted to practice in Connecticut and is an active member of the Connecticut Trial Lawyers Association.

Recognized for his skill and advocacy, Attorney Berryman has been named a Local Litigation Star by Benchmark Plaintiff. He is also a sustaining member of the National Organization of Social Security Claimants’ Representatives (NOSSCR) and has presented numerous educational seminars on Connecticut workers’ compensation law for attorneys, professionals, and community organizations. His knowledge of workers’ compensation issues has led to appearances as a legal commentator on News Talk 104.7 FM WXLM’s Lee Elci Show.

Throughout his career, Attorney Berryman has successfully represented clients in complex and high-stakes claims. In the notable case of Brent Cugini v. Electric Boat, he secured an award of ongoing total disability benefits for a client whose workplace harassment resulted in a disabling psychological injury. This outcome highlights his commitment to advocating for workers facing challenging and often life-changing circumstances.

Beyond his legal practice, Attorney Berryman is deeply involved in the southeastern Connecticut community. He has served on the boards of the Lyme Art Association and Friends of Lymes’ Senior Center and volunteers as a spokesperson for the Notre Dame Club of Southeastern Connecticut. His longstanding commitment to community service earned him the Steve Shaw Distinguished Service Award from the Lyme-Old Lyme Little League. Together with his staff, he participates annually in The Neighborhood Alliance's Adopt-A-Family program and supports numerous charitable initiatives throughout the region.

Known for his dedication to clients, professional leadership, and community involvement, Attorney Berryman has built a reputation as a trusted advocate for injured workers and disability claimants across Connecticut.
