Biography
Jim Vigmond is the founding and managing partner of Oatley Vigmond, an Ontario personal injury law firm recognized for its leadership in catastrophic injury litigation, including spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, serious orthopaedic injuries, and wrongful death claims. Jim represents clients across Toronto, the Greater Toronto Area, Hamilton, Ottawa, North Bay, Sudbury, and Sault Ste. Marie, advocating for individuals and families affected by life altering injuries arising from car accidents, motorcycle accidents, truck accidents, and other motor vehicle accidents.
Called to the Ontario Bar in 1983, Jim built one of the most respected personal injury practices in Canada before retiring from active practice in December 2025. He has acted as counsel at all levels of court in Ontario and has been involved in landmark cases that have shaped personal injury law, including catastrophic impairment claims and high value spinal cord injury litigation. Notably, in Morrison v. Greig, Jim secured one of the highest damages awards in Canada for a spinal cord injury, reflecting his ability to achieve exceptional outcomes for seriously injured clients.
Jim is widely recognized for his expertise in complex personal injury and motor vehicle accident litigation. As part of Oatley Vigmond’s highly regarded team, he combines strategic trial advocacy with a deep understanding of the medical and financial realities facing individuals with catastrophic injuries.

Jim is a past president of the Ontario Trial Lawyers Association and the Simcoe County Law Association, and a Fellow of both the American College of Trial Lawyers and the Litigation Counsel of America, distinctions awarded to a small percentage of leading trial lawyers. He has also received the Distinguished Trial Lawyer Award from the Ontario Trial Lawyers Association and recognition from the Ontario Bar Association for excellence in insurance law.
A recognized leader in legal education, Jim developed and taught Canada’s first Personal Injury Advocacy course at Queen’s University Faculty of Law and continues to contribute to professional development through speaking engagements with organizations such as the Canadian Bar Association, the Advocates’ Society, and the Ontario Trial Lawyers Association. He is also a contributing author to the Oatley McLeish Guide to Personal Injury Practice in Motor Vehicle Cases.
