James H. Buchan

James Buchan is a partner located in Gowlings' Toronto office. James is a member of the firm's Board of Trustees, as well as a past leader of the firm's National Practice Group for Intellectual Property Litigation and a past co-leader of its National Trademarks Practice Group.

As a barrister and solicitor, James' expertise in the IP field is broad-based and extensive, covering a wide range of IP-related contentious and non-contentious matters, including patent, trademark and copyright litigation. James has appeared as counsel of record in more than 25 reported decisions of the Federal Court, Federal Court of Appeal and Supreme Court of Canada, and has been counsel in over 750 trademark opposition and expungement proceedings before the Canadian Intellectual Property Office.

James is active in numerous national and international IP committees and industry groups. He is also committed to pro bono work, and is one of Gowlings' co-ordinating partners for Pro Bono Law Ontario.
