Hunter M. Klein is a Houston, Texas insurance trial lawyer with Green Klein Wood & Jones. Board Certified in Consumer and Commercial Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization and a member of the Texas Insurance Law Council, Hunter focuses his practice on Insurance Law and the representation of policyholders in complex coverage disputes, bad faith litigation, and high-stakes insurance claims.
Throughout his career, Hunter has represented businesses and individuals in state and federal courts across the country. His work has contributed to significant verdicts, judgments, and settlements involving insurance coverage and bad faith claims. In one notable case, he secured a finding that an insurer acted with “specific intent to harm” its insured, resulting in a judgment exceeding $4 million. In another matter, he obtained a bad faith judgment that resulted in recovery more than five times the actual damages owed under the policy.
Hunter has also handled precedent-setting insurance litigation involving emerging industries and unique coverage issues. Following the Waldo Canyon Fire in Colorado Springs, he represented a medical marijuana facility in a dispute involving insurance coverage for cannabis-related losses. Hunter briefed and argued the matter in United States District Court, obtaining a ruling that marijuana was not considered contraband for purposes of insurance coverage where its use was lawful under state law. The matter later resolved through settlement.
His courtroom background began during law school at the University of Houston Law Center, where he competed on the UHLC Mock Trial Team and served as an editor for the Houston Journal of International Law. During his internship with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, Hunter was among the select law student interns permitted to try cases on behalf of the office.
Hunter has handled matters in both state and federal courts and has briefed and argued appeals before Texas Courts of Appeal and the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. He has also prepared briefing submitted to the Texas Supreme Court.
In addition to his litigation practice, Hunter regularly contributes to legal education programs involving Insurance Law. He has co-authored articles and presented continuing legal education courses for the State Bar of Texas Insurance Law Section and frequently speaks at seminars involving insurance coverage, bad faith litigation, and trial strategy.
Hunter was recognized as a Texas Rising Stars honoree from 2018 through 2023. Alongside partners John Wood and Bill Jones, he also helps present the “Dragon Slayer®” training seminars focused on insurance litigation and trial practice.
A lifelong Texan, Hunter was raised in North Houston and comes from a family with longstanding Texas roots. He is an Eagle Scout and lives in Houston with his wife, an Assistant District Attorney, their two sons, and their dog, Fitzgerald.
