Disputes involving wills, trusts, and estate assets can be complicated and emotionally difficult. For more than 30 years, Helen Ward has advised family members, estate executors, personal representatives, and trust companies regarding estate disputes and related legal issues, both in and out of court.
Helen assists clients in Edmonton, throughout Alberta, and across Canada with matters involving mental capacity, the interpretation of wills, conflicts between executors and beneficiaries, dependency claims, powers of attorney, and personal directives. Her practical and clear advice helps clients understand their options and make informed decisions. Where appropriate, Helen works with clients to consider mediation and other dispute resolution processes as alternatives to litigation.
Helen also advises clients on trusts and estate planning, including the preparation of wills, powers of attorney, and personal directives. She assists executors and personal representatives with the administration of estates and provides guidance on their responsibilities throughout the estate administration process.
Helen previously taught wills as a sessional instructor at the University of Alberta Faculty of Law. She has also taught and presented papers for organizations including the Legal Education Society of Alberta, the Canadian Bar Association, and STEP (Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners). Helen is a member of STEP and regularly participates in the Senior Practitioners’ Estate Planning and Litigation Forum.
Helen has spent her entire legal career with Duncan Craig LLP, beginning with her articles in 1988. As a Partner and co-chair of Estates Solutions, she serves clients in Edmonton and surrounding communities in the areas of trusts, estates, estate planning, and estate litigation.

Outside the office, Helen enjoys running and cycling in the Edmonton river valley, volunteering, hiking, reading, and spending time with friends and family. She and her husband, Greg, have two adult daughters. They also enjoy travelling and recently returned from a kayaking adventure in Gwaii Haanas, Haida Gwaii.
