My experience at the “nation’s law firm,” the United States Department of Justice, shaped my view of the law. The exceptional integrity, talent, and dedication of my colleagues taught me how to fiercely advocate for my client, the United States, while upholding the Department’s mandate “to pursue justice.”

I started my career as a trial attorney with the United States Department of Justice in Washington, D.C. I was hired through the Attorney General’s Honor Program, considered to be the nation’s premier entry-level federal attorney recruitment program. On my first day at DOJ, I was handed a case file and told, “go to work.” The on-the-job training experience taught me to think quickly, be resourceful, and to develop the confidence necessary to handle the unexpected.

I have litigated various types of tort actions including a consolidated medical malpractice action in the U.S. District Court, Middle District of Alabama, earning a commendation from the Air Force for my handling of the matter. My practice focuses primarily on healthcare and business litigation. I am passionate and committed to providing the best representation possible to each client.

Tell us a little bit about your practice and what makes it unique.

I represent healthcare providers in professional malpractice actions. Every case is unique as the medical issues and the acutal medicine varies. It is challenging and keeps me on my toes. I feel like I have been a first year medical student for years as I have a lot of basic medical information but not enough context to fully understand it without the help of my experts. It is always interesting.

What common questions are you asked by clients, and what are your answers?

I am often asked by clients, "What will be the outcome of this case?" While I cannot predict an outcome, I assure them that we are working diligently from the start to ensure that we put ourselves in the best position possible to increase our chances of a favorable outcome. I also tell them that they do not need to worry about the case because that is my job.

Describe one of your most interesting or memorable cases in the past year.

I have several medically complex cases which I really enjoy. They are complicated and require many specialties to help us understand the medicine. I particularly like how the various disciplines overlap yet provide their own piece of the puzzle. It allows us to be part detective, part doctor.

What is most challenging about your area(s) of expertise?

Learning the medicine -- it is very complex and technical but absolutely fascinating.

Were there any particular inspirations (people or events) that spurred your interest in your practice area(s)?

My father was a doctor and when I was very young we lived in a small town in the days that medicine was a different creature. He took me with him on house calls and rounds in the some of the facilities where he had privileges. I was always fascinated by the medicine but mostly I was so impressed with the relationship and trust that he established with his patients. It is such a noble profession and I am honored to represent health care providers and assist them in defending the care they provide.

What other interests do you have?

I love to paint -- not walls but paintings such as landscapes. I find it relaxing and rewarding. I am by means a good painter but I find it enjoying nonetheless.

Anything else you’d like to share?

It is easy to practice law in an amazing law firm like Lincoln Derr. I am able to focus on the law and my clients and for that, I am appreciative.
