BACKGROUND
Hai Han focuses her practice on U.S. and foreign chemical and pharmaceutical patent matters with special emphasis on small molecules. She’s trusted by her clients for her valuable insights as a strategic counselor, for IP management and patent procurement.
Hai received a B.S. in Chemistry from Peking University (China) in 1992 and a Ph.D. in Organic and Physical Organic Chemistry from Brown University (1997). She also conducted post-doctoral research at the Department of Chemistry, Northwestern University (1998) and holds a J.D. from the University of Washington School of Law (2003).

She has many clients who are innovators in the life sciences arena and count on her insights to keep their businesses on solid ground and moving ahead. To her clients, from start-ups to clinical-stage companies to academic institutions, and international corporations, Hai is a truly trusted advisor. A fluent native Mandarin speaker, Hai represents a variety of clients in Asia, with a particular focus on China.
With a Ph.D. in chemistry from Brown University, Hai’s deeply versed and experienced in pharmaceuticals, polymer science, nanotechnology, cleantech, medical devices, and biotechnology. Her sweet spot is in chemical-related inventions that involve small molecules and pharmaceutical formulations.
As an attorney who understands business, Hai’s first priority is to guide her clients toward IP strategies which align with, and advance, their business objectives. She’s frequently tasked with growing global patent portfolios for businesses ranging from cutting-edge biomedical start-ups to established international corporations. Her earned experience allows her to advise clients with great detail on every aspect of IP management, from patentability questions to life-cycle planning, to right-sized budgeting, due diligence, and market appropriate strategy. Hai also closely collaborates with clients on licensing, joint venture, co-development and sponsored research agreements. She represents both patent owners and petitioners in post-grant and appeal proceedings.

Hai is a member of the Washington State Patent Law Association and is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. She is admitted to the Washington State Bar (2003).
