Guy is recognised as one of Queensland’s pre-eminent dispute resolution lawyers and his focus is on the resources and energy sectors.

He was admitted as a solicitor in 1980 and since then has practised in commercial litigation, dispute resolution and corporate debt recovery.  This work has mostly been conducted on behalf of national and transnational public companies, banks and major lending institutions.

Guy’s clients include Macarthur Coal, Peabody, QGC, CS Energy and AMCI.
The Asia Pacific Legal 500 Guide describes Guy as an ‘exceptional’ practitioner ‘particularly in complex litigation’.  In the Doyle’s 2010 publication on lawyers and law firms across Australia, Guy is listed as a ’Leading’ lawyer in the Commercial Litigation and Dispute Resolution (Queensland) section.  Guy is noted as ‘always on top of things and very astute’.

Guy has significant experience seeking judicial or administrative review of government decisions surrounding tenements and other land issues, acting for mining companies, and resources sector operators.

Recent resources based litigation includes:

  • acting for a coal mining company for administrative review of decisions regarding tenements involving the Minister for Mines and Energy and judicial review proceedings instigated by a neighbouring mining company
  • acting for a resources sector company in a dispute with the voluntary administrators of a group of companies about the price to be paid to exit a joint venture
  • acting for a mining services provider in a contractual dispute with a major multinational supplier of mining equipment, which concerns the development of novel mining technology, and
  • acting for a coal/iron ore mining company in a contractual dispute a central feature of which is the valuation of coal and iron ore joint ventures.

He is highly sought after by resources sector clients, and others from a diverse range of industries, as he is known for his forensic knowledge and understanding of legislation and its application, as well as the policy drivers which guide government decisions.  In disputes with government or with administrators, Guy is known for his ability to deliver strategic yet practical and commercial outcomes.
