Mr. Pomije attended the University of Virginia (B.A. 1971) and the Marshall-Wythe School of Law, College of William and Mary (J.D. 1974). He joined Cooper, Spong & Davis in 1987 and is a shareholder. Mr. Pomije practices in the areas of Elder Law and Civil Litigation, including Elder Law Litigation. His elder law and civil litigation practices include guardianship/conservatorship issues, will and estate litigation, collections against decedents’ estates, estate planning, and estate administration. His civil litigation practice also includes a broad spectrum of chancery matters. He serves as Portsmouth’s Commissioner of Accounts, a quasi-judicial position to which he was appointed by the Portsmouth Circuit Court. As Commissioner of Accounts he oversees the financial transactions of court-appointed fiduciaries in Portsmouth, such as executors of decedents’ estates. Mr. Pomije is licensed to practice in Virginia. He is a former prosecutor (1974-1982), and served as the Commonwealth’s Attorney for the City of Portsmouth (1982) and as a substitute judge, Portsmouth General District Court (1990-1997). He was President of the Portsmouth Bar Association (1988-1989), President of the Portsmouth Rotary Club (1991-1992), and Chairman of the Portsmouth Museum and Fine Arts Commission (1986-1987). He has served and continues to serve on the boards of many other civic organizations. In 2002, he brought The Dictionary Project to Portsmouth. Through that project, he oversaw the Portsmouth Rotary Club’s distribution of thousands of dictionaries to third graders in Portsmouth public and private schools for twelve years. That project continues through the efforts of the Portsmouth Rotary Club. For several years, Mr. Pomije was an officer and member of the Board of Directors of the former Virginia Guardianship Association, a state advocacy organization for the incapacitated elderly and disabled. He currently chairs the Community Advisory Committee for Jewish Family Service of Tidewater, Inc.’s Personal Affairs Management Program, a program serving the legal, financial and personal needs of the elderly and disabled in the Hampton Roads region and beyond. He has been instrumental in changes to Virginia’s adult guardianship and conservatorship statutes to better enable non-profit agencies to serve as court-appointed guardians and conservators for incapacitated adults. Mr. Pomije also currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Virginia Conference of Commissioners of Accounts, and is a member of the Virginia Bar Association and the Portsmouth Bar Association. He was the co-recipient of the Norfolk-Portsmouth Bar Association’s Pro Bono Award in 1998.
