Gary A. Chamberlin is a Member of the firm and has been practicing law since 1990. He possesses extensive experience in employment law and advises employers on issues affecting their workforce. He is Chair of our Affirmative Action and Government Contractors practice.

Employment Law

Besides the traditional counseling work he performs, such as developing employee policies and procedures, Mr. Chamberlin represents employers in EEOC, Michigan Department of Civil Rights and civil court actions involving discrimination, harassment, wrongful discharge, wage and hour, and workers’ compensation disputes. He provides legal counsel and perspective that is truly client centric. Possessing experience in both a unionized and non-union environment has afforded Mr. Chamberlin a perspective valued and appreciated by his clients.

Affirmative Action and Government Contractors

Companies with over 50 employees awarded federal government contracts exceeding $50,000 are governed by complicated and often confusing affirmative action requirements. Often, employers are unaware that such compliance extends to every plant and operating location, not just the facility producing the product or providing the services to fulfill the contract. Mr. Chamberlin has significant experience advising companies awarded sizable federal contracts on affirmative action compliance and related issues, including evaluating company-wide compliance, and drafting and updating annual action plans. he is also retained to represent companies audited by the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP).

Education Law

Besides his representation of corporate sector employers, Mr. Chamberlin has worked extensively with public school districts in Western Michigan. As legal advisor to several public and charter school districts, he has handled all aspects of employment related matters, including wage and hour and unemployment disputes, student discipline and expulsion issues, collective bargaining matters, and grievance and arbitration issues relating to principal, teaching, custodial and transportation staff.

Professional Affiliations, Activities and Honors

Mr. Chamberlin is involved in several professional organizations, including the Human Resources Group of West Michigan (SHRM) and the Association of Human Resource Management (AHRM). He is a member of the American Bar Association, the State Bar of Michigan, the Grand Rapids Bar Association and the Michigan Council of School Attorneys.
