Ernest Calderón, a native of Morenci, Arizona, and a sixth-generation native of what was New Mexico Territory, has practiced law in Arizona since 1983. Ernie's leadership roles include service as president of the Arizona Board of Regents, president of the State Bar of Arizona, president of the Boys Scouts of America (Grand Canyon Council), and chair of the Catholic Community Foundation, Diocese of Phoenix. Six Arizona governors have appointed him to leadership positions.
Ernest is a known "problem solver" in the business law world. He has represented a spectrum of commercial companies, partnerships, trusts, non-profit, governmental, quasi-governmental and private entities. Ernest is respected by his legal colleagues and is often selected to mediate complex litigation matters. He has served as in-house general counsel and presently serves as “outside” general counsel to a number of entities. His role encompasses a spectrum of experience from advising on risk management issues to representing clients in governmental regulatory matters to advising chief executive officers and directly advising boards of directors.
Ernest recognizes the pressures on businesses and is known for “win-win” solutions to business disputes. His practices have included insurance coverage resolutions, policy drafting, complex contractual negotiating and agreement drafting. He knows Arizona’s legal and judicial communities and counsels his clients with sensitivity to those dynamics.
Ernest is a former president of the State Bar of Arizona who works well with other attorneys, opposing counsel and strives for collaborative solutions whenever possible. In addition to conducting an effective and diverse law practice encompassing a broad scope of business advising, litigation, administrative, transactional and appellate skill, Ernie has substantial in-house legal experience as the Director of Legal Affairs for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona and as a litigation attorney for Arizona Public Service.
