Biography

As a partner in the Intellectual Property Practice Group, Emer focuses her practice on patent litigation and counseling in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. With extensive experience representing clients in Hatch-Waxman and patent infringement disputes in federal court and before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), she deftly guides clients through complex legal and regulatory landscapes.

Emer frequently partners with pharma and biotech clients early in the product lifecycle, advising on strategies to bring products to market, secure freedom to operate, and protect innovation. Her end-to-end approach spans pre-litigation counseling, FDA filings, discovery, trial, and appeal.

Clients value Emer’s clear communication, collaborative approach, and ability to marry science with law to deliver business-driven results. Known for translating cutting-edge science into persuasive legal arguments, she combines technical insight with legal acumen to achieve optimal outcomes. She also advises on patent prosecution, portfolio management, freedom-to-operate opinions, and due diligence for pharmaceutical mergers and acquisitions.

Originally from Ireland and a Cambridge graduate, Emer is a qualified barrister, bringing a global perspective to her practice. Her leadership and excellence have earned recognition in IAM Patent 1000 for Litigation, “40 Under 40 Illinois Attorneys to Watch” by the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin, “Chicago’s Notable Women Lawyers” by Crain’s Chicago Business, and “IP Star” by Managing IP. In 2025, she received the Coalition of Women’s Initiatives in Law Leadership Award.

Emer serves on the Chicago-Kent College of Law Alumni Board, where she provides career advice and mentors students. Emer also serves on the National Board of the Coalition of Women’s Initiatives in Law. She is an active thought leader in the industry, frequently speaking on Hatch-Waxman litigation strategies and recent developments in IP law.
