Ellen Torregrossa-O’Connor, Shareholder with the law firm of Wilentz, Goldman & Spitzer P.A., concentrates her practice in the areas of criminal law and civil rights litigation. She also serves as General Counsel to the firm, acting as chief adviser to the firm regarding conflicts, risk management and loss prevention.
Ms. Torregrossa-O’Connor represents clients in all phases of criminal proceedings in both State and Federal Courts, including significant motion, trial, and appellate work. Ms. Torregrossa-O’Connor has experience handling serious criminal cases, ranging from homicide offenses to theft and drug offenses, as well as complex racketeering and white-collar crimes, including public corruption, business-related offenses, and health care claims and insurance fraud. Ms. Torregrossa-O’Connor also represents juveniles charged with offenses and those facing waiver to adult criminal court. Ms. Torregrossa-O’Connor also appears frequently in municipal court matters, as well as civil and administrative matters, disciplinary hearings at the municipal and state level, DYFS/DCPP litigation, and licensing matters before various administrative agencies. She also handles civil litigation, representing both plaintiffs and defendants in civil rights actions and civil RICO and fraud-related matters.
Ms. Torregrossa-O’Connor first became associated with the firm after completing an appellate clerkship with the Honorable Thomas F. Shebell, Jr. in 1991. She practiced in the areas of criminal defense and civil rights before joining the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office in 1993. As an assistant prosecutor, she acquired significant jury trial experience. Before returning to the firm, she joined the firm of O’Connor and O’Connor, where she practiced in the area of municipal law, handling discrimination claims, labor and employment matters, disciplinary actions, and other matters before various local boards.
Ms. Torregrossa-O'Connor is a member of the Board of Trustees of the New Jersey Women Lawyer's Association and serves as co-chair of its Public Policy Committee. She is also Vice President of the Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers of New Jersey where she serves as Co-Chair of the Legislative Committee. Ms. Torregrossa-O’Connor is a member of the Middlesex Bar Association, and is a Trustee and member of the Monmouth Bar Association, where she also serves as Chair of the Criminal Practice Committee and appointed member of the Juvenile Justice Committee. Ms. Torregrossa-O’Connor is also member of the Communications Committee of the Associate Alumni of Douglass College. She serves as an appointed member of the New Jersey Supreme Court Committee on Jury Selection.
Ms. Torregrossa-O’Connor was recently selected for inclusion in the 2015 list of the Best Lawyers in America and named the Best Lawyers 2015 Criminal Defense: White Collar “Lawyer of the Year” in Woodbridge.
