Biography

Doug Alexander is widely regarded as one of the premier advocates specializing in practice before the Supreme Court of Texas and is listed by Texas Super Lawyers as one of the Top 10 lawyers in Texas. Doug is the 2013 recipient of the Texas Bar Foundation's Gregory S. Coleman Outstanding Appellate Lawyer Award; was selected as the 2017 Austin Appellate Lawyer of the Year by Best Lawyers in America; and is listed in the Texas Lawyer Go-To Guide as one of five "Top-Notch Lawyers" in Texas for Appellate Law.

Doug is recognized as a leader in the appellate bar. He has been selected by his peers for inclusion in Best Lawyers in America in Appellate Law; is listed in Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business in Appellate Litigation; and has been inducted as a Fellow into the by-invitation-only American Academy of Appellate Lawyers.

Over the course of his career, Doug has served as:

  • Formosa Plastics Corp., USA v. Kajima International, Inc.
Successfully defended $50 million judgment in the Supreme Court of Texas, in suit by one multinational corporation against another for fraud in the inducement arising out of a multi-billion-dollar construction project.
  • National Plan Administrators v. National Health Insurance Co.
Successfully obtained reversal and rendition of take-nothing judgment before the Supreme Court of Texas, setting aside judgment for actual and punitive damages. Decision established that third-party administrator did not owe fiduciary duty to insurance company that it served, where the parties' relationship was governed by a written contract.
  • Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. v. Johnson
Successfully obtained reversal of judgment in personal injury case, in landmark decision establishing requirements for obtaining spoliation instruction in Texas.
  • Universal Health Services, Inc. v. Renaissance Women's Group
Successfully obtained reversal of multi-million dollar judgment and rendition that plaintiffs take nothing in decision by Supreme Court of Texas involving the interpretation of a lease of office space to a group of physicians.
  • Texas Association of Business v. Texas Air Control Board
Successfully obtained favorable decision from Supreme Court of Texas, holding that statutes authorizing administrative agencies to assess fines prior to judicial review violated the open courts guarantee of the Texas Constitution. The decision constituted a landmark in Texas for the standards it set regarding the standing of an association to prosecute claims on behalf of its members. The decision has been cited over 5,000 times.
