Biography

Doug Meier is a patent attorney and managing partner of NK Patent Law in Raleigh, North Carolina. His practice combines a background in electrical engineering with years of experience advising clients on patent law matters involving software, electronics, telecommunications, and computer technologies. Doug works with businesses, inventors, and technology companies to help protect and manage intellectual property assets through strategic patent guidance.

Before entering the legal profession, Doug worked as an electrical engineer for a major defense contractor in Houston, Texas, where he designed and developed software tools supporting NASA’s Space Shuttle Program. His engineering experience provides valuable insight when working with clients developing complex technologies and preparing patent applications before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Doug’s practice is focused on patent prosecution, Patent Law, and IP strategy. He advises clients on patent portfolio development, patent application drafting and prosecution, intellectual property strategy, and business considerations related to patents and innovation.

Over the course of his career, Doug has represented multinational companies in matters involving multiple patents before the International Trade Commission (ITC). His work has involved technologies including computers, mobile devices, telecommunications systems, networking hardware, wireless communications standards such as 3G, 4G/LTE, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth, digital image processing, texture compression and decompression, smartphone camera technology, and nonvolatile memory systems.

Doug has also participated in various stages of patent litigation matters, including discovery management across related cases, coordination with technical consultants on infringement and validity issues, depositions, and legal briefing preparation. His combination of technical and legal experience allows him to communicate effectively with engineers, business leaders, and innovators across a wide range of industries.
