Darren Bieganek is a partner at Duncan Craig LLP in Edmonton, Alberta, practising in the areas of Banking and Finance Law and Insolvency and Financial Restructuring Law. He advises debtors, lenders, creditors, insolvency professionals, and other stakeholders involved in complex insolvency and restructuring matters across Alberta and Western Canada.
Darren acts as counsel in matters involving corporate restructurings, receiverships, bankruptcies, creditor remedies, priority disputes, shareholder disputes, and related commercial litigation. He regularly represents clients in proceedings before all levels of court in Alberta, the Federal Court of Canada, and the Supreme Court of Canada.
His work in insolvency and restructuring has been recognized through inclusion in Best Lawyers in Canada since 2008. He was named Lawyer of the Year for Insolvency and Restructuring in Edmonton and Northern Alberta in 2015, 2022, 2023, and 2025. Darren has also been recommended in Insolvency and Restructuring by Lexpert since 2011.
Darren contributes regularly to legal education and professional development initiatives within the insolvency and restructuring community. He has prepared and presented papers and articles for organizations including the Legal Education Society of Alberta, the Canadian Bar Association, the Canadian Association of Insolvency and Restructuring Professionals, Insight, and the Insolvency Institute of Canada. He currently serves as Chair of the Editorial Advisory Committee for the Insolvency Institute of Canada and is a member of the Thomson Reuters Practical Law Canada Insolvency and Restructuring Advisory Board and the Alberta Court’s Commercial Law Template Order Committee.
In 2012, Darren was appointed King’s Counsel (KC) in recognition of his contributions to the legal profession and community. Born and raised in Wetaskiwin, Alberta, he values hard work, lifelong learning, and community involvement. Outside the office, Darren enjoys spending time with his family, golfing, and visiting Jasper with his wife and their two dogs.

“I grew up in a small town in Alberta and learned the importance of hard work and continual learning from my parents. During my first year of law school, the company where my father had worked for more than 35 years went bankrupt. As a result, my father and hundreds of others lost a significant portion of their pensions. That experience shaped my interest in insolvency and restructuring law and continues to motivate my work with businesses, lenders, creditors, and other stakeholders facing financial challenges.”
