Biography

Craig Raabe joined the partnership in 2016 from a large, regional law firm, where he previously served as the chair of the litigation department. Mr. Raabe has tried many complex civil and criminal cases. He is a Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers. He has been listed in The Best Lawyers in America© since 2006 (Copyright by Woodward/White, Inc., Aiken, SC), most recently in six disciplines: Bet-the-Company Litigation, Commercial Litigation, Antitrust, Regulatory/Environmental Litigation, White-Collar Criminal Defense and General Criminal Defense. The Best Lawyers in America© also has named Mr. Raabe as the Hartford “Lawyer of the Year” in the areas of Antitrust (3 times), White-Collar Criminal Defense and Intellectual Property. Chambers and Partners© has named Mr. Raabe to its highest level of recognition, Band 1, in the area of General Commercial Litigation and White-Collar Crime and Government Investigations.

Mr. Raabe’s commercial trial experience is broad and includes areas such as antitrust, government contracting, fraud, intellectual property, and unfair trade practices. He also has tried many serious felony criminal cases in state and federal court and is active in the criminal defense trial bar. As part of his commitment to public service, Mr. Raabe has handled and tried significant court-appointed criminal matters, including death penalty litigation. In addition to his trial practice, Mr. Raabe counsels clients on compliance issues and the resolution of regulatory enforcement actions by government agencies.

By appointment of the chief judge of the Second Circuit, Mr. Raabe has served on the Reappointment Committee for Connecticut’s federal defender, and the chief judge of the Connecticut district court appointed him to chair the United States Magistrate Reappointment Committee in Connecticut. In 2012, the Connecticut district court judges selected Mr. Raabe for the district’s Pro Bono Award for his service to indigent clients. In addition, he is listed as one of the Top 50 Lawyers in Connecticut by Super Lawyers ® 2012 (Super Lawyers is a registered trademark of Key Professional Media, Inc.). Mr. Raabe serves as an officer of the Connecticut Bar Association’s Federal Practice and Antitrust Sections.

Mr. Raabe is admitted to practice in the U.S. Supreme Court, the Courts of Appeals for the First, Second, and D.C. Circuits, the U.S. District Courts for Connecticut and the Eastern and Southern Districts of New York, the U.S. Tax Court and the state of Connecticut. He is an honors graduate of Valparaiso University and Western New England College of Law, where he served as Editor-in-Chief of the Law Review. Following graduation, Mr. Raabe served as the law clerk for the Honorable Arthur H. Healey of the Connecticut Supreme Court.

Mr. Raabe is a commercial, instrument-rated pilot and is active in general aviation. He serves as a volunteer pilot for Angel Flight Northeast, which provides free air transportation to people requiring serious medical care.

  • Rolls-Royce PLC v. United Technologies Corporation
Served as co-counsel for United Technologies Corporation in $6 billion patent infringement action relating to jet engine fan blade technology. Our client prevailed on summary judgment.
  • Bridgeport Harbour Place v. City of Bridgeport et al
Served as lead trial counsel for Connecticut's largest municipality in a four-month, multidefendant jury trial. A real estate developer had brought a $100 million breach of contract case in connection with a $1 billion waterfront development. The jury returned a verdict in favor of our client on all counts.
  • United States v. Tobacco Valley Sanitation
Obtained an acquittal for a waste-hauling corporation after an eight-week federal criminal antitrust trial. The government had alleged a customer and geographic market allocation scheme.
  • Senate Bipartisan Review Committee
Served as lead counsel for Connecticut's former Senate minority leader in an investigation by the Connecticut General Assembly's Bipartisan Committee of Review.
  • Intellectual Property/Antitrust Litigation
Served as lead trial counsel to manufacturer of commercial printing devices in three-week federal jury trial involving claims of antitrust, patent infringement, trade secret theft, computer crimes, fraud, and unfair trade. Successfully defended against $27 million antitrust claim.
  • FCPA Litigation
Defended Fortune 50 company against contract, tort, and trade practice claims by an Argentine sales representative arising from contract termination. Our client asserted the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) as a defense. A five-week trial to a federal jury resulted in a highly favorable verdict for our client.
  • Federal government corruption investigation
Successfully represented Connecticut's commissioner of public works in a federal corruption investigation that led to the resignation and federal conviction of Connecticut's governor. Negotiated a declination of prosecution for our client.
  • Federal Election Law Prosecution
Defended former Congressional candidate in election law prosecution. Obtained a below-guidelines sentence.
  • Cable Television Antitrust Litigation
Successfully defended major cable provider against claims of antitrust, unfair trade and breach of contract. Obtained dismissal of class action and antitrust claims and obtained a very favorable settlement of all other claims.
  • Defense of Abuse Litigation
Obtained summary judgment for major religious organization in case involving claims of repeated sexual abuse and a $26 million demand.
  • United States v. Bakowski
Successfully defended a corporate executive in a three-week federal trial in which the government had alleged contracting fraud. The government claimed that our client had engaged in a scheme to defraud the government in connection with the sale of rocket fuel. The jury took less than 30 minutes to acquit.
  • Direct Mail Tax Litigation
Served as lead trial counsel for the nation’s largest direct mail advertising company in a trial in the United States Tax Court. The case involved a significant issue of first impression under the Section 199 Domestic Product Tax Deduction.
  • F-22 Raptor Litigation
Represented subcontractor designing and manufacturing a weapons bay door system for a F-22 Raptor project in connection with contract breach by its subcontractor. Simultaneously obtained dismissal of subcontractor’s federal action, and defended dismissal on appeal, while prosecuting breach of contract and business tort claims in state court in a different jurisdiction. Negotiated advantageous settlement for client that enabled it to meet its contract obligations to the project.
  • Patent Litigation
Prosecuted and defended patent infringement action in the Eastern District of Texas for a worldwide supplier of gas generation systems regarding multiple patents in the coal mine firefighting industry.
