Mr. deSaussure is a leader in public finance law and a leader in the Charleston community.
As a public finance attorney, has served as bond counsel for political subdivisions in the issuance of both tax-exempt and taxable borrowings for 30 years. In 2003, he was appointed corporation counsel to the City of Charleston.
He is a permanent member of the Fourth Circuit Judicial Conference.
Mr. deSaussure has helped find financing solutions for public/private partnerships such as:
- the Family Circle/City of Charleston world-class tennis facility on Daniel Island
- $422 million in revenue bonds for the Medical University Hospital Authority—one of the largest FHA-insured deals in the country.
For over ten years, he served as general counsel to the Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority.
Mr. deSaussure is an active leader in national, regional, state, and local activities.
He has served as president of the Coastal Community Foundation, the South Carolina Historical Society and the Gibbes Museum of Art.
In addition, he has served on the board of trustees of Spoleto Festival USA, The Society of the Cincinnati, the Governor’s Mansion Foundation, the University of South Carolina Development Foundation, the Charleston Museum, Woodberry Forest School, and Charleston Day School. He was also a graduate of Leadership South Carolina, Class of 1984.
In 2001, Mr. deSaussure received the “Compleat Lawyer Award” presented by the University of South Carolina Law School Alumni Association to recognize high standards of professionalism and performance.
