Biography
Brenda Kocaj is an Associate Attorney at Easton & Easton, LLP, with a lifelong passion for serving the underrepresented of our community. She comes to the firm after a recent stint representing defendants in high-stakes medical malpractice matters. Having used that time to learn the strategies employed to protect defendants in high-value personal injury cases, Brenda is excited to now return to her roots and use her knowledge of defense tactics to better represent the victims of negligence and wrongdoing.
Brenda received her B.A. from the University of California, Irvine, in 2010, where she majored in Political Science. She went on to attend Whittier Law School, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude and obtained her Juris Doctor in 2013. She also earned a Certificate in Children's Rights. In December 2013, Brenda was admitted to the California Bar.
During law school, Brenda earned:
- CALI Award in Legal Writing (an award for the top grade in the class)
- CALI Award in Spanish for Lawyers
EXPERIENCE
Following law school, Brenda completed two years of broad personal injury plaintiff work, both at the pre-litigation and litigation levels, including significant experience in drafting complaints, conducting depositions, engaging in law and motion, as well as research and settlement negotiations.
She then spent an additional two years working in a more specialized area of personal injury — medical malpractice — on the defense side, learning the tactics and stratagems that high-stakes defense litigators use to devalue Plaintiff's cases. Specifically, Brenda handled cases involving:
- Birth injuries
- Elder abuse
- Dental malpractice
Through this experience, not only has Brenda's knowledge of the law and litigation strategy advanced, but so has her commitment to justice and advocacy for the victims of negligence.

Q&A
Why settle for less when you can have a top-rated, award-winning legal team who achieves Proven #1 Highest Settlements for their clients?
At Easton & Easton, we are paladins of the legal profession — determined advocates of noble causes. When you hire us, you don't just get one attorney — you get our entire family. With more than 100 years of combined experience, we have recovered more than $500 million for our clients, including more than $75 million last year alone.
What makes my background unique is that I spent years on the defense side representing defendants in high-stakes medical malpractice matters. I learned the tactics and stratagems that defense litigators use to devalue Plaintiff's cases. Now I use that knowledge to better represent victims of negligence — I know how the other side thinks, and I know how to defeat them.
We prepare every case from day one as if we're going to trial — and insurance companies know it.
Clients most often ask: "Will this cost me anything?" and "What is my case worth?"
Our answer to the first is simple: No fee unless we win. You pay nothing upfront.
The second question requires more discussion. Every case is unique, but we've built our reputation on turning seemingly modest cases into significant recoveries by finding the human story behind every injury. My experience on the defense side gives me insight into how insurance companies and defendants try to minimize claims — and how to counter their tactics effectively.
We also help clients understand that we handle everything: medical bills, insurance companies, car repairs, and all the paperwork. Our job is to give you peace of mind so you can focus on getting better.
The most challenging aspect of personal injury law is that we're almost always fighting Goliaths — large insurance companies and corporations with unlimited resources whose sole objective is to pay injured victims as little as possible.
Having worked on the defense side in medical malpractice, I've seen firsthand the tactics used to minimize and deny valid claims. Defense attorneys are skilled at devaluing cases, shifting blame, and exhausting plaintiffs until they accept less than they deserve.
The challenge is leveling that playing field. Now that I'm on the plaintiff's side, I use my knowledge of those defense tactics to anticipate their strategies and defeat them. It's deeply satisfying to advocate for victims knowing exactly how the other side operates.
I've always had a passion for serving the underrepresented. During law school, I completed multiple externships focused on children's rights — working in dependency court, advocating for minors with County Counsel, and volunteering with Street Law to teach at-risk youth about the law. I also earned a Certificate in Children's Rights from Whittier Law School.
That commitment to advocacy for those who can't fully advocate for themselves naturally led me to personal injury law. When someone is injured through negligence, they're often overwhelmed — dealing with medical bills, insurance companies, and pain, all while trying to recover. They need someone in their corner who will fight for them. That's what drives me every day.
Outside of work, I'm a proud puppy mother of two! I also enjoy reading, hiking, watching sports, traveling (particularly to Mexico City), and salsa dancing.
I speak Spanish fluently and return to Mexico City each year to visit family who still live there. Being bilingual allows me to connect with and serve Spanish-speaking clients who might otherwise struggle to navigate the legal system.
My path to Easton & Easton was unconventional — I started in plaintiff's personal injury work, then spent time on the defense side in medical malpractice, and now I'm back representing plaintiffs. That journey gave me a 360-degree view of personal injury litigation.
I know how defense attorneys think because I was one. I know the tactics they use to minimize claims, delay proceedings, and wear down plaintiffs. Now I use that knowledge to fight for victims of negligence with the talented team at Easton & Easton.
My experience in children's rights and advocacy for the underrepresented remains close to my heart. Every client who walks through our door deserves someone who will fight for them — and that's exactly what we do.
