Dr Andrew Lu OAM has substantial experience representing the insurance industry, health practitioners, and Government. Andrew began practice as a commercial insurance solicitor with Freehills, managed medical and professional indemnity and general insurance disputes at Minter Ellison, and was a partner with Jarman McKenna. He leads HBA’s health law practice.
Andrew has conducted administrative law litigation, mediated vocational and commercial matters to early resolution, and advised on contractual disputes, the conflict of laws, and tortious claims. He promotes good governance in the Arts as a non-executive director of the Arts Law Centre of Australia, Australian Youth Orchestra, Melbourne International Film Festival, and National Gallery of Australia Foundation. He is a member of the Council of the Art Gallery of Western Australia Foundation.
Areas of expertise
Andrew provides public and private hospitals, universities, and health practitioners with strategies to achieve the best outcomes in professional, public and products liability claims, and in vocational and disciplinary investigations. He also advises on the drafting and interpretation of insurance contracts.Experienced as a trial and appellate advocate, Andrew has appeared in the State and Federal courts including the High Court of Australia, at inquests and inquiries, and before many Tribunals.
He actively supports the professional development of others by delivering regular in-service training and through the Law Society of Western Australia, as an author and editor for various LexisNexis publications including Halsbury’s, and as an adjunct Senior Lecturer at the University of Western Australia Law School. Andrew is also a sessional (part-time) member of the Western Australian State Administrative Tribunal.
Andrew received the Order of Australia medal in 2008 and a 40 Under 40 Award in 2017 for professional services and community investment. He holds masters and doctoral degrees in Law, is a Fellow of ANZIIF, and in 2018 was elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Law.
