Amy E. Totten approaches every case by carefully considering all perspectives involved. As a former prosecutor, she understands the importance of thorough preparation for trial and thoughtful analysis, particularly when clients are facing significant, life-changing circumstances. Her ability to anticipate opposing arguments allows her to develop practical strategies tailored to each client’s situation.

Over more than two decades in legal practice, Amy has handled thousands of matters ranging from traffic offenses and support issues to complex divorce cases, child sexual assault prosecutions, and capital murder cases. This broad background informs her current Family Law practice. During her time as a prosecutor, she refined strong investigative skills and utilized a wide range of tools to evaluate evidence and witness credibility. She also implemented and oversaw the special grand jury system in Loudoun County, which enabled prosecutors to address challenging evidence, evaluate witness testimony, and revisit unsolved cold cases. Amy now applies this investigative approach when handling complex asset divorces, contested child custody disputes, and other domestic relations matters. Her experience also allows her to identify when collaboration with professionals such as business evaluators, forensic accountants, and health care providers may be beneficial to a client’s case.

While Amy is well prepared to advocate for her clients in the courtroom, she is also an experienced negotiator. She understands both the legal and emotional aspects of Family Law matters, including the impact on children, finances, and long-term stability. Amy works with clients to balance their goals while remaining mindful of the costs and demands of litigation. When settlement is appropriate, she assists clients through methods such as property settlement agreements, mediation, and negotiations with opposing counsel.
