Allan Brett is a partner in Smart & Biggar and is a leader of the electrical and electronic engineering and computer sciences practice groups in the Ottawa office. With almost twenty years of experience, he has drafted in excess of 200 originating patent applications. His practice is focused on patent protection of electrical, electronic and computer-related inventions in Canada, the United States and around the world. Allan has drafted and prosecuted patent applications for a variety of technologies, including communications, semiconductors, memory systems, optical systems, software and business methods.
Allan provides strategic advice on portfolio development, management and utilization. Allan assisted in the drafting and patenting of technology that formed the basis of one of the largest high technology deals in Canadian history. Allan is sought out by both local small to mid-size entities and top global innovators to protect their intellectual property interests in Canada and elsewhere.
He is a leader in the development and education of the next generation of professionals, and in the management of the firm. Allan developed and coordinates the firm’s in-house patent agents training program. He is also a member of the firm’s executive committee and the Head of the Operations sub-committee for the firm’s patent practice.
Prior to joining the firm, Allan obtained industry experience as an engineer at Lockheed Canada, then Bell Northern Research, and Prior Data Sciences where he was software development team leader on the Radarsat II simulator project. His industry experience continues to inform his practice, providing practical insights to his clients.
