Recognized in Best Lawyers since 2027 Alison Gilmour is a civil litigation lawyer, who exclusively represents individuals in lawsuits against insurance companies and related negligence claims against insurance agents and lawyers. She has focused on disability and life insurance cases for more than 25 years.
Alison handles long term disability, short term disability, critical illness, life insurance and long term care insurance matters for individuals whose claims have been denied by their insurers. Until 2014, Alison used to defend insurers and worked as a mediator in life and disability insurance matters. This experience gives her valuable insight into how insurers think in order to maximize the value of her clients’ cases.
Alison is a frequent speaker on practical and legal issues involving long term disability law. She is the former Editor of the Ontario Trial Lawyers Association (OTLA) Long Term Disability Section Newsletter.
Alison lives and practices out of the Waterloo office of Burn Tucker Lachaîne PC. In addition to practising in Waterloo since 1999, she has always practiced in other centres – initially as defence counsel and a mediator and since 2014 representing plaintiffs. She has appeared before the Ontario Superior Court and Ontario Court of Appeal as well as in British Columbia on disability and life insurance trials and appeals. She has represented clients in litigated matters in Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, British Columbia and the Atlantic Provinces on disability and life insurance matters since 2001.
Alison is an active member of the legal community and is the current Chair of OTLA’s Long Term Disability Section and is a member of the WRLA’s Board of Trustees.
