Biography

Adam Handfinger is a Co-Managing Partner in Peckar & Abramson PC’s Miami, Florida office, serves as Chair of the Client Service Committee, and is a member of the firm’s Executive Committee. He is certified by The Florida Bar in Construction Law and concentrates his practice on Commercial Litigation, Construction Law, and Litigation – Construction. Adam represents construction professionals across a wide range of matters, including contract negotiation, project administration, subcontractor performance issues and claims, payment disputes, construction defects, bond and insurance matters, project closeout issues, and the litigation of related disputes.

Adam advises clients at all phases of construction projects, frequently assisting with real-time issue resolution to help manage risk and limit disputes. His practice includes representing clients in state and federal courts throughout the United States, as well as in arbitration proceedings. His litigation experience covers a broad spectrum of construction-related matters, including payment and delay claims, construction defect disputes, and insurance coverage issues arising from construction projects.

Adam and his team have played key roles in several published appellate construction law decisions, including:

  • Altman Contractors, Inc. v. Crum & Forster Specialty Insurance Company, 232 So. 3d 273 (Fla. 2017) (Florida Supreme Court decision addressing an insurer’s duty to defend contractors against construction defect claims asserted under Chapter 558, Florida Statutes);
  • James B. Pirtle Construction Co., Inc. v. Warren Henry Automobiles, Inc., 329 So. 3d 205 (Fla. 3d DCA 2021) (Third District Court of Appeal decision confirming lien rights against a tenant’s leasehold interest when the landlord is a public entity); and
  • MHB Const. Services, LLC v. RM-NA HB Waterway Shoppes, LLC, 74 So. 3d 587 (Fla. 4th DCA 2011) (Fourth District Court of Appeal decision addressing the scope of lien rights for tenant improvement work).

In addition to his construction and commercial litigation practice, Adam works with Peckar & Abramson’s Employment Law Group defending employment practice liability matters, including claims involving discrimination, wrongful termination, retaliation, and wage and hour issues. His experience includes defending Fair Labor Standards Act class and collective action claims brought by construction laborers.

Adam has been recognized by legal industry publications for his work in construction law and commercial litigation, including listings by Chambers, The Legal 500, Super Lawyers, and Best Lawyers. He has also received peer ratings from Martindale and recognition from regional legal publications in South Florida.

Adam has authored more than 70 articles on construction law topics and frequently speaks on issues affecting the construction industry. He also serves as an Adjunct Professor at the Terry W. Stiles School of Real Estate Development at the H. Wayne Huizenga College of Business and Entrepreneurship at Nova Southeastern University, where he teaches a course on construction management.
