Esdaile, Barrett & Esdaile, today one of the most well-respected law offices in New England and home of nationally-recognized leaders in trial and family law, was born in 1938 with the partnership of civil litigation pioneer J. Newton Esdaile and his law school classmate, general practitioner Charles W. Barrett, Sr. The skills and experience of this pairing formed the foundation for a practice that shaped the nascent civil litigation world both in Boston and nationally. Along the way, the Esdaile and Barrett partnership has attracted some of the most talented lawyers in Boston, growing from a two-man operation well-known in the Boston area to an office of nearly 20 attorneys and a national reputation. Over the past 60 years, Esdaile, Barrett & Esdaile has maintained a consistent commitment to furthering client interests through ethical practice.

The standard for excellence in legal practice set by the firm's founders has remained a constant as Esdaile, Barrett & Esdaile has grown and developed, as has the firm's involvement in the legal community. Members of the current partnership have represented the firm and the legal profession as officers of the Massachusetts Bar Association, the Boston Bar Association, the East Middlesex and Plymouth County Bar Associations, the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, and the Massachusetts Academy of Trial Attorneys, and as members of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts' Judicial Nominating Committee. Esdaile, Barrett & Esdaile can also count among its ranks law school instructors, editors and authors of legal publications, and members of the Board of Bar Overseers, the Governor's Special Commission on Medical Malpractice, the Governor's Task Force on Alternative Dispute Resolution, and the Superior Court Committee on Time Standards. The standard of legal practice maintained at Esdaile, Barrett & Esdaile is reflected in the elections of the late J. Newton Esdaile and current partners James N. Esdaile, Jr., Norman Jacobs and Michael Mone to the American College of Trial Lawyers, and in Norman Jacobs' election to the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. Michael Mone's recent election as President of the ACTL, and his status as the first plaintiff's trial lawyer to hold that position, is a statement on the success of the founders' original efforts to earn the legal community's respect for this area of the law.

Esdaile, Barrett & Esdaile's present practice covers a spectrum ranging from complex tort and matrimonial law to business litigation and contract disputes. The firm's success is a testimony to the ongoing appeal of the opportunity to practice law in an environment of civility and principle.
