GLP-1 medications—such as Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro—have received widespread attention as treatments for type 2 diabetes and, more recently, for weight loss. As use of these drugs has increased, so have reports of patients experiencing serious and unexpected side effects. As a result, lawsuits are now being filed across the country.

VanDerGinst Law is following developments related to these claims. If you or a loved one experienced complications after taking a GLP-1 medication, the information below provides an overview of the issues currently being raised.

What Are GLP-1 Medications?

GLP-1 receptor agonists are medications originally developed to help manage blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes. They work by mimicking a naturally occurring hormone that helps regulate blood sugar, reduce appetite, and slow digestion. Drugs such as Ozempic (semaglutide), Wegovy, Rybelsus, Trulicity, and Mounjaro have also been prescribed for weight loss, including for individuals without diabetes.

Why Are Lawsuits Being Filed?

Patients who have filed lawsuits allege they experienced serious, and in some cases life-threatening, side effects that were not adequately disclosed. Many of these complications involve the gastrointestinal system.

Reported side effects include:

  • Gastroparesis (delayed stomach emptying)
  • Severe nausea and vomiting
  • Stomach paralysis
  • Intestinal blockages
  • Pancreatitis
  • Gallbladder complications

Some individuals report long-term health effects that required hospitalization, surgical intervention, or ongoing medical care.

What Are the Allegations Against Drug Manufacturers?

The lawsuits generally allege that manufacturers:

  • Did not adequately warn patients and healthcare providers about the risk of serious gastrointestinal complications
  • Marketed the drugs for weight loss while minimizing or downplaying known side effects
  • Knew or should have known about these risks based on internal data and adverse event reports

Many of these cases are being handled as part of mass tort litigation. This process allows individual claims to proceed while coordinating common issues to improve efficiency in the court system.

What Should You Do If You’ve Been Affected?

If you or a family member took a GLP-1 medication and later experienced significant side effects—particularly gastrointestinal issues that required medical treatment—you may have legal options. Claims are subject to filing deadlines, so timing can be important.

VanDerGinst Law is currently reviewing potential GLP-1 medication cases. Our firm works on a contingency fee basis, meaning there is no attorney fee unless a recovery is obtained.
