To help you stay safe while walking in Michigan, here are some important tips to keep in mind:

Follow the Rules and Signals

Traffic rules aren’t just for drivers; they’re for everyone who uses the road, which includes pedestrians. These rules are intended to keep everyone using the road out of danger. Just like the drivers are required to adhere to signs and signals, so should pedestrians.

Use Sidewalks When Available

Most roads in Michigan have sidewalks, in order to keep pedestrians safe and away from vehicles. Always walk on the sidewalk if there is one available. If there isn’t a sidewalk, be sure to walk facing traffic to stay as far away from vehicles as possible.

Cross at Intersections or Crosswalks

Many pedestrian accidents occur when people don’t look carefully before crossing the road. Always try to cross at intersections or designated crosswalks as this lowers the risk of an accident. Before crossing, look in all directions for oncoming traffic, including cars that may be turning.

Find the Best Place to Cross

If you need to cross the street but there are no crosswalks or intersections available, look for a well-lit area where you can see traffic clearly. Wait for a gap in traffic and make sure you have enough time to cross safely while watching out for vehicles.

Be Aware of Cars Coming Out of Driveways

Be extra cautious when walking on streets with driveways or parking lots. Anticipate that cars will come out of nowhere, like when one pulls out of a driveway. Always be on the lookout for cars backing out or entering and exiting driveways.

Don’t Walk Under the Influence

Walking while under the influence of alcohol or drugs is just as dangerous as driving while under the influence. Impairment can affect judgment and make you less aware of your surroundings. To stay attentive, avoid drugs or alcohol when you’re planning to walk.

Walk More Often

If you frequently use a car, consider walking instead. Not only will the environment thank you, but walking is also a great way to stay healthy and fit.

Conclusion

The safety of pedestrians on roads is up to the vehicle drivers as well as the pedestrians themselves. Always remember that staying safe while walking on the road is also up to you. If you are involved in an accident, don’t hesitate to seek legal help in Michigan to get the support you need.
