2019 has been an exciting year so far for Joseph F. Brophy. The renowned business lawyer and his partners aligned themselves with J. Kevin Edmundson, former senior counsel for the Securities and Exchange Commission. Several of Austin’s most talented and experienced practitioners now lead Brophy, Edmundson, Shelton, & Weiss, PLLC, and the firm is recognized as one of Texas’s leading civil litigation boutiques and business law firms.

“From small contract disputes to bet-the-company cases, we are prepared to handle any business dispute,” Brophy says. “Our lawyers are considered trailblazers in many specialties, including real estate, contract law, securities litigation, employment litigation, FINRA, and fraud-related litigation. We have broad experience on both sides of the docket, which allows us to better assess the strengths and weaknesses of our case and those of our opponents.”

BESW’s wide range of past clientele includes business owners, investor sand executives, commercial real estate development firms, financial investment and advisory firms, medical service companies, franchisees, law firms, lawyers, law professors, and doctors. Brophy leads a broad-based business practice, including both transactional and litigation work. “Our reach extends coast to coast, from the proverbial board room to the courtroom,” he says.

With varied experience at large national and international firms and in the SEC, the firm’s trial-tested lawyers are uniquely positioned for success. Brophy, who has had the privilege of practicing with several great lawyers over the last 25 years, maintains that BESW has a combination of talent and resources largely unmatched by other boutique firms.

Our reach extends coast to coast, from the proverbial boardroom to the courtroom.

“Our goal is to be a true business partner for our clients,” he says. “We offer the sort of personal attention that makes all the difference in these cases, particularly when it comes to large pieces of litigation against major entities and law firms.”

Brophy has been selected by Best Lawyers© for inclusion in the commercial litigation practice area since 2013. He was named a Texas Super Lawyer Top Rated Business & Securities Litigation Lawyers-Austin, and he was thrice recognized by Princeton Global’s “Top 100 Lawyers in America.” He graduated with an undergraduate degree in finance from the University of Texas and earned his J.D. at St. Mary’s School of Law, where he graduated magna cum laude and was a member of the John Harlan Academic Honor Society.

A bootstrapper at heart, the grandson of an Irish union boss in New YorkCity and the son of a Marine, Brophy applies his steadfast determination to winning for his clients—a philosophy his partners share.

“We are smart, aggressive lawyers who put our clients first and love what we do,” Brophy says. “Our clients—many of whom have been with us for years—are getting stronger results than ever. Nothing makes us happier than that.”
