Stephen P. Groves, Sr. is a Member in the Charleston, South Carolina office of Nexsen Pruet, LLC. He received his B.A. in Political Science from the College of Charleston in 1979 and his Juris Doctorate from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1986. He is admitted to the South Carolina Bar, the United States Supreme Court, and the United States Courts of Appeal for the Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, Seventh, Ninth, Tenth, Eleventh, and Federal Circuits. He has served on the editorial board of the South Carolina Lawyer, as a contributor to South Carolina Jurisprudence, and as a contributor to Libel Defense Resource Center's Annual Media Libel Law Survey. He has also served as (a) a contributing editor to South Carolina Civil Procedure and The Law of Domestic Relations in South Carolina; (b) as a contributor to the ABA Trial Tort and Insurance Practice Section's publications: Annotations to the Standard Fire and Homeowners Insurance Policy, Property Insurance Issues in Catastrophe Losses, Misrepresentations in the Life, Health and Disability Insurance Application Process, and Superseding and Staying Judgments – A National Compendium; (c) as editor of the ABA Young Lawyers' Division Arson Project Committee's Arson Reporter, (d) as a chapter contributor to the treatise Law and Practice of Insurance Coverage Litigation (West 2000), (e) as editor (Appellate Advocacy Newsletter and Property Insurance Law Newsletter) or a contributing editor to various ABA committee newsletters, and (f) has authored numerous articles for the ABA Tort and Insurance Practice Journal, as well as, the TIPS The Brief.
He has spoken at various ABA meetings on such topics as Amendments to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, Ethics in Appellate Practice, Demonstrative Evidence, Fiduciary Duties in Commercial Transactions, Ethics in Client Representation and Contact, and the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. He has also spoken at the Property Insurance Research Bureau/Liability Insurance Research Bureau Annual Conference on property/liability insurance, claims, and insurance coverage issues.
His main areas of practice are appellate work, insurance coverage determinations/litigation, and business litigation. He is a member of the International Bar Association, the American Bar Association (TIPS and Judicial Division member; has served as Chair of the Appellate Advocacy and Business Litigation committees; Vice-Chair of the Property Law Committee, Civil Procedure and Evidence, and International Law committees; Chair of the Judicial Division’s Lawyers Conference’s Technology in the Law Committee; Secretary of the General Committee Board; TIPS Committee Coordinator; and on the Scope and Correlation Committee, Task Force for Vision 20/20, Ethics and Professionalism Committee, and Public Relations Committee), the South Carolina Bar (served as a member of the Professional Responsibility, Ethics Advisory, and Access to Justice committees, and on the Task Force on Court Appointments), the Charleston County Bar Association, the American Trial Lawyers Association, the Center for International Legal Studies, and the American Judicature Society.
