Bob Black has been a shareholder of MehaffyWeber since 1985 and has been with the firm since his graduation from Texas Tech School of Law, summa cum laude, in 1980. He has been the firm’s managing shareholder since 1998. He successfully defended a multinational corporation in a complex patent infringement case and has tried numerous other cases including many personal injury suits. Mr. Black concentrates his practice in mediation and arbitration. He has mediated more than 3,800 disputes and has arbitrated even more. Bob was the President of the State Bar of Texas for the 2011-2012 term. He is a former Chair of the Board of Directors of the State Bar of Texas as well. Bob graduated from The University of Texas at El Paso in 1977. He attended college on scholarships provided by the National Honor Society and by the debate program. In 1980, he received his Juris Doctorate, summa cum laude, from Texas Tech University School of Law. He was an editor of the Texas Tech Law Review and graduated Order of the Coif. He has been named the Distinguished Alumnus of both the University of Texas at El Paso and Texas Tech University School of Law.
Memberships and Honors:
Bob was the President of the State Bar of Texas (2011-2012). His presidential initiative, Oyez, Oyez, Oh Yay!, received the national NABE/Lexis Award for Community Outreach and Education 2012. He has recently been appointed to the Board of Disciplinary Appeals by the Supreme Court of Texas. He previously served as Chair of the State Bar Board of Directors (2006-2007). The Board honored Black in 2009 with a Certificate of Merit for his leadership and outstanding contributions to the legal profession and he received a Presidential Citation in 2006 for outstanding service.
He is a former Trustee of the Texas Bar Foundation (2007-2010) and served on its Executive Committee. He is a Trustee of the Texas Supreme Court Historical Society (2013-2016). Bob is a Fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation and the American Bar Association. He has been recognized in Best Lawyers in America® since 2003 and was recently named "Best Lawyers' 2011 and 2012 for Beaumont Personal Injury Litigation - Defendants Lawyer of the Year." He has been named a "Texas Super Lawyer®" by Law & Politics in Texas Monthly magazine since 2004, a "Top 100 Lawyers in the Houston Region," for 2010 and 2012 and on "Texas Super Lawyers List for Ten Consecutive Years" as of 2013.
