James K. Treadwell is a 1969 graduate of the University of Oregon School of Law who focuses his practice in the areas of estate planning and trust and estate administration.  He has substantial experience in the structuring and implementation of estate tax value freeze techniques, including multi-tiered discount partnerships and limited liability companies, split interest trusts — both charitable and non-charitable — private foundations, and the integrated use of life insurance and investment products in estate planning.  His practice also involves asset protection, the administration of complex estates, and the resolution of disputes arising in estate administration, both in advocacy roles and per court appointments ranging from administrator to arbitrator, mediator, and special master.

Mr. Treadwell is a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel. He has served on the executive committee of the Real Property, Probate and Trust Section of the Washington State Bar Association and was the founding chair of the section’s Probate Law Task Force, a group responsible for significant legislative improvements to the Washington State Probate Code. He is currently actively involved with the Estate and Gift Tax Committee of the Washington State Bar Association’s Tax Section and is a long-time member of the Seattle Estate Planning Council.
