Howard L. Gum
Certified Family Law Specialist

Howard Gum has been practicing family law and serving clients throughout Western North Carolina since 1976. He is a North Carolina Board Certified Specialist in Family Law and a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. He has been recognized for numerous awards based on his service and professional excellence. Since 2006, he has consistently been selected to North Carolina’s “Super Lawyers”, an honor enjoyed by only the top 5% of lawyers in the state, and has been continuously listed in Best Lawyers in America for more than 25 years. His peers have rated him a 5.0 – the highest “AV” rating – through the Martindale-Hubbell peer review rating process based on his high ethical standards and professional ability.

Howard focuses his law practice exclusively on family law related legal matters, from preparing prenuptial agreements for those clients anticipating marriage to assisting clients through the arduous process of separation and divorce. He has a successful track record in representing clients from all walks of life and his vast knowledge and experience enables him to efficiently assess how the law affects his clients’ unique circumstances.

While every domestic case is unique, and not all divorce matters deal with extremely complicated issues, complex divorces are not limited to families with high incomes or high net worth. Complex divorce issues often arise in cases where there are professional practices and closely held family businesses and/or couples who have “part marital” and “part separate” funds invested in real estate, pension and retirement plans, etc. Long-term marriages where alimony, home equity, retirement and college savings accounts are at issue also present challenges that are best handled by an experienced family law specialist.

Aside from child custody, divorce is primarily about financial issues. Failure to consider financial consequences, such as tax matters, when negotiating settlements, or making arguments at trial, can cost clients thousands of dollars. Howard is well-versed at recognizing, analyzing and understanding the fine details of financial issues associated with child support, spousal support, and identifying, valuing and distributing marital property.

Many situations require outside experts to analyze and trace cash flows, locate assets, determine asset values and address complex tax issues that frequently arise. Howard understands these issues and can advise you when these experts are needed and how to find them. His network of experienced valuation experts and outside professionals has proven beneficial time and time again.

Howard and his staff are available to their clients when needed. They take great pride in providing prompt professional service to all of their clients. They strive to return telephone calls and respond to client inquiries without delay and always keep you up to date on every aspect of your case.

Howard and his staff are keenly aware of the emotional and psychological impact associated with divorce and other family related matters. As a result, they have created a professional, yet personal, environment in which these needs are respected and addressed.
