A fifth generation Calgarian, Barbara Widdowson earned her B.A. from the University of Calgary in 1972 and her LL.B. from the University of Alberta in 1975. She articled to J.V.H. Milvain, Chief Justice of the Trial Division of the Supreme Court of Alberta. She was called to the Alberta Bar in 1976.
Barbara has practiced exclusively in the area of Family Law since the early 1980's. She has been a partner at the Calgary law firm Widdowson Kachur Ostwald Menzies since it was founded in April 2011. Barbara has taken extensive dispute resolution, mediation and arbitration training and much of her practice is in the areas of mediation and arbitration.
Barbara believes that the practice of Family Law is a constantly evolving one, and that practitioners in the area must be willing to use creative approaches to better assist their clients in working through what is often the most difficult period of their lives. Sometimes court intervention is necessary to resolve Family Law issues, but this intervention should be sought only as a last resort.
Barbara has been an instructor in Family Law for CPLED (the bar admission course), and for the Red Deer College Family Law Course. She has written articles and presented for the Legal Education Society, the Canadian Bar Association and the Family Law Conference.
Barbara's spare time is spent running (slowly) and golfing (badly).
