Woon Chooi's practice includes both contentious and non-contentious matters. She has represented clients in contentious IP matters up to the Court of Appeal (apex court) in Singapore. She represents clients in high stake patent, copyright and trade mark disputes, including criminal IP prosecution.
In the course of her career, Woon Chooi was in-house counsel with multinational IT system integrator Cap Gemini at the time of the technology boom and the Y2K concerns at the turn of the 21st century. This provided her with an in-depth knowledge of the IT industry.
Woon Chooi is also one of the pioneer lawyers in the franchising industry in Singapore and is recognized as a leading franchising lawyer. In the 1990s, she was instrumental in setting up the Franchising and Licensing Association (Singapore) or FLA, an association of franchising businesses, and today, she remains as its honorary legal advisor. For many years, and up to the present, she has been appointed as a judge of the FLA's prestigious Franchise Awards.
Although Woon Chooi primarily advises in the area of IP and technology, she has varied commercial practice, and advises clients on a wide range of transactions including hotel management; hospital management; sale and purchase transactions; employment; collaboration; research and development; distribution and manufacturing; franchising and licensing; IT and technology transfer; education, entertainment and publishing.
Woon Chooi is also one of the lead partners in Dentons Rodyk providing advice on personal data protection and privacy issues.She has developed and conducted comprehensive compliance programs for many organizations in Singapore to prepare them for the coming into force of the Personal Data Protection Act in 2014, and advises on personal data protection, data privacy and cyber security issues.
Woon Chooi also has vast experience in IP filings to secure protection for clients, having started her career as the Assistant Registrar of Trade Marks and Patents. She is a registered Singapore Patent Agent and a Malaysia Trade Mark Agent, and handles world-wide trade mark and patent portfolios for local and multinational clients.
