Thomas M. Closson is a Shareholder in the Portsmouth, New Hampshire office of Jackson Lewis P.C
Mr. Closson has been practicing labor and employment law since his admission to the New Hampshire Bar in 1993. Prior to joining Jackson Lewis, he was a founder and partner in Flygare, Schwarz & Closson, PLLC, a highly regarded firm specializing in labor and employment law.
Since 2005, Mr. Closson has annually been recognized by Chambers as one of the top labor and employment attorneys in New Hampshire. In the 2010 edition of Chambers, he was described as "a bright and capable lawyer with a strong employment advisory, litigation and trial practice.” Mr. Closson was also awarded a Martindale-Hubbell® Peer Review Rating of AV® Preeminent™.
Mr. Closson is an experienced appellate litigator. He has argued, and won, significant cases before the New Hampshire Supreme Court. Most recently, Tom convinced the Court to overturn a decision by the New Hampshire Public Employee Labor Relations Board on an issue of employee discipline.
Mr. Closson also has extensive trial experience. During his career, he has successfully represented numerous clients before New Hampshire Courts and juries. He was lead trial counsel in one of the New Hampshire Superior Court’s most high profile cases, representing the “donor towns” in their challenge to the constitutionality of the Statewide Property Tax.
Mr. Closson recently secured summary judgment in a significant ERISA breach of fiduciary duty case pending in the United States District Court for the District of New Hampshire.
Mr. Closson’s practice includes providing employment/labor counseling to a broad variety of public and private sector clients. He works closely with in house counsel and human resource professionals to develop employment agreements and implement personnel policies.
Mr. Closson also regularly represents clients in hotly contested labor arbitrations and administrative proceedings.
Mr. Closson is a frequent speaker on a variety of labor and employment law topics and conducts compliance training for management on discrimination, harassment and wage and hour issues.
Mr. Closson received his B.A., summa cum laude, from the University of New Hampshire in 1990, where he was admitted to Phi Beta Kappa. Tom received his J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1993.
Mr. Closson was named one of the “Leaders in their Field” in the 2012 Chambers USA Legal Guide. He is also named in New England Super Lawyers for employment and labor law.
