John is originally from Nova Scotia.  He graduated from Dalhousie Law School and then moved to Vancouver in 1982 to article with Russell and DuMoulin.  He was admitted to the Bar in BC in 1983 (and to the Nova Scotia Bar in 1986). 

John accepted an offer of partnership at R&D in 1989.  He practiced primarily commercial and construction litigation at Russell and DuMoulin until 1994 when John, Dinyar Marzban and Bob Jenkins left R&D to start their own firm, Jenkins Marzban Logan LLP.  They practiced together at JML until the end of 2011 when Bob was appointed to the Supreme Court of B.C. Dinyar and John remain at the firm, and John is managing partner.  The firm practices primarily construction and family law, and has the highest possible ratings in those areas.  

John has been counsel on a multitude of complex construction and commercial cases in BC.  He was counsel for the Plaintiffs on some of the first large, and very difficult, leaky condo cases in BC.  He is regarded by many as the leading lawyer in BC on the law of tendering. He has been successful as counsel in several leading cases involving construction tendering, including Fred Welsh v. B.G.M.Construction, Stanco Projects v. Her Majesty, Continental Steel v. Mierau Contractors and Hub Excavating v. Orca Estates.  A representative sample of John's cases can be found at www.jml.ca.  

John is often asked to act as a mediator, arbitrator or referee in construction and commercial disputes.   John has devoted a great deal of time to mentoring young lawyers over the years, and has assisted many in finding the right career path.   John is a member of a variety of legal, construction and development associations, and is a very frequent chair or lecturer at conferences organized by those associations, including the Continuing Legal Education Society of BC and the Professional Legal Training Program.  He has also been the author of numerous papers on commercial litigation and construction law topics (see representative sample at www.jml.ca).   

John's involvement in legal, industry and community associations includes:   

Teaching Builder's Liens at virtually every PLTC session for approximately the last 20 years  
Former Director of the Law Courts Inn Society  
Former Director of the Vancouver Bar Association 
Former Member of the Advocates Club  
Fellow (and former Director) of the Canadian College of Construction lawyers
Co-chairing or presenting at a multitude of CLE Construction Law and Litigation courses 
Chairing or presenting to lawyers and others at dozens of construction industry seminars on construction law topics
One of the first contributing authors to the BC Builder's Lien Practice Manual  
Involvement for many years in the Construction and Civil Litigation sections of the BC branch of the CBA  
Many years of assisting other lawyers in connection with mistakes or potential mistakes made by them in the construction law practice  
Performer with various lawyer bands at the "Battle of the Bar Bands", raising many  thousands for the Benevolent Society  
Member of the Urban Development Institute
