JIM HOENIG, J.D., PhD. (psychology)
Jim Hoenig is the only person in Hawaii listed in the “Family Law Mediation” category in The Best Lawyers in America and in Honolulu Magazine’s Best Lawyers in Hawaii. He is also listed in "Mediation" and "Arbitration," and he is the Arbitration Lawyer of the Year (2015) for Hawaii.
Jim has over 25 years experience as a full-time mediator and arbitrator specializing in difficult and complex business and family matters. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the Hawai'i Supreme Court Disciplinary Board.
Jim graduated first in his class from Stanford and Stanford Law School. He was Law Review President, and he later served as Law Clerk to the Chief Justice of the United States.
He is the author of "How to be Persuasive in Arbitration," (The Practical Lawyer, October 2015), Divorce Mediation Basics," (The Practical Lawyer, July 1997), “Guide to Creative Mediation” (Dispute Resolution Journal, Spring 1997), “Practitioner’s Guide to Mediation” (Hawaii Bar Journal, Jan. 1998), and numerous other articles on arbitration and mediation.
Jim has recently received awards from The Mediation Center of the Pacific (Outstanding Leadership in Mediation), Hawaii State Bar Association ('Ikena Award for Education), and Hawaii Family Court (for outstanding mediation service).
Lawdragon Magazine (in its survey, “500 Leading Judges in America”) said about Jim: “When Hawaii couples call it quits, he’s the mediator of choice to resolve contentious disputes.” Jim assisted in drafting the new National Uniform Family Law Arbitration Act.
