Professional experience
Ben is the Leader of the Litigation and Dispute Resolution team at Plastiras Lawyers. Ben has been admitted as a solicitor in Queensland for over 25 years and has practised, almost exclusively in commercial litigation, dispute resolution, regulatory compliance, mediation and insolvency. He has recently been recognised in the 10th (May 2018) edition of 'Best Lawyers' for his expertise and ongoing dedication to the legal industry, in the specialisation of Alternative Dispute Resolution.
He is a strong proponent of early intervention and mediation of business and commercial disputes. Before joining Plastiras Lawyers, Ben was head of Litigation and Risk Management at a boutique Brisbane property and commercial services firm and prior to that, a Partner in the Commercial Disputes team at international firm DLA Phillips Fox – Brisbane (now DLA Piper).
He has extensive negotiation, mediation and alternative dispute resolution training and experience. In June 2017, Ben attended the Harvard Law School Negotiation Institute at Harvard University and completed a Negotiation and Mediation Course to further extend his specialist mediation and dispute resolution skills. Based on this specialist experience, he has also acted in corporate advisory roles for clients and has developed a strong interest in risk management, regulatory compliance and corporate governance within an increasingly complex legal, commercial and regulatory business environment. His particular interest is delivering effective and value-based legal outcomes.
Ben predominantly advises corporations and SME’s on all areas of commercial litigation, risk management, alternative dispute resolution, Corporations Act compliance, trade practices compliance, employment disputes, consumer protection and insolvency. He has also supervised and managed legal teams in significant matters in the Supreme, Federal and Appellate Courts involving trade practices litigation, commercial arbitrations and large shareholder disputes, construction, contractual, commercial property and leasing disputes, misuse of intellectual property and confidential information, corporate insolvency and administration matters.
In 2001, Ben completed a post-graduate Certificate in Law (QUT), comprising Masters’ level subjects in specific practice disciplines. He has also undertaken post-graduate study at FINSIA in areas of financial markets and economics, and the Harvard Negotiation Institute.
