First an attorney must be nominated. Then their name will appear on a ballot for a specific practice area and geographical region. Pending positive evaluation, and good standing with the Bar Association, they may be included in the Best Lawyers list.

Who founded Best Lawyers?
Steven Naifeh and Gregory White Smith founded Best Lawyers in 1981. They are graduates of the Harvard Law School, class of 1977. Before turning to publishing and writing, Mr. Naifeh worked briefly at Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy in New York and Mr. Smith at Morrison & Foerster in San Francisco.
