Bill Short joined Adams and Reese in 2014 as Special Counsel in the firm’s Columbia office and as a member of the Transactions and Corporate Advisory Services Practice Group.
Practicing law since 1983, Bill has more than 30 years of experience with corporate turnarounds and restructurings in corporate bankruptcy law, helping lenders, secured parties and corporations in workouts under Chapters 7 and 11 of the Bankruptcy Code. He often appears on behalf of lenders in state, federal and bankruptcy courts in South Carolina, North Carolina, Alabama, Tennessee, New York and Delaware.
Bill is a certified specialist by the South Carolina Bar in Bankruptcy/Debtor-Creditor Law. He is ranked among The Best Lawyers in America® for Bankruptcy and Creditor-Debtor Rights / Insolvency and Reorganization Law, and Litigation – Bankruptcy. He is also recognized by South Carolina Super Lawyers® in Bankruptcy & Creditor/Debtor Rights.

Bill’s representative matters include:
- Represented the Chapter 11 Trustee for the bankruptcy debtor BHB Enterprises, LLC, doing business as Tycoon’s Gallery of Games. Obtained a multimillion-dollar judgment, the proceeds of which were used to pay creditor claims, and sold the debtor’s business and recovered numerous assets that had been converted by the debtor’s principals. As the case proceeded, several of the debtor’s principals were prosecuted and incarcerated under various federal criminal charges arising from and related to their actions in the South Carolina bankruptcy case.
- Represented Force Protection Inc., in significant trade-secret litigation.
- Served as the former general counsel to the South Carolina Automobile Dealers Association.
Bill is the past-president and serves on the board of the Carolina Chapter of the Turnaround Management Association. A former president of the predecessor to the South Carolina Law Bankruptcy Association, Bill presented at the association’s 2010 annual meeting, “What you Need to know before your next 363 Sale.”
Among the people Bill most admires is the late Honorable Chief Judge J. Bratton Davis of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of South Carolina, a gentlemen’s gentleman; he taught Bill how to appear in court, practice law, and be polite, courteous and above reproach, but also be effective at your job.
In the community, Bill serves on the national board of directors of Ducks Unlimited, Inc., and he is a member of the Boy Scouts of America, Indian Waters Council, and the Congaree District Eagle Scout Project Committee. He also serves as Vice Chairman of the Board and Chaplain of Jubilee Academy, a Christian school for generationally, poverty-stricken children.
