With almost 20 years’ experience in legal practice, Tiago Duarte currently holds the position of professor of constitutional and administrative law at the law faculty of Universidade Nova. He also lectures in investment protection arbitration at a number of universities. He is a former visiting fellow of the University of Cambridge and is professionally and academically focused on all areas of public law, including litigation and arbitration. He is also very active as arbitrator and counsel in international investment protection arbitrations (ICSID, UNCITRAL and ICC). His name has been associated with important PPP projects such as the renegotiation of shadow toll road concessions and he is also involved in other important operations such as privatisations. A member of the panel of arbitrators of the Commercial Arbitration Centre and president of the investment arbitration committee of the Portuguese Arbitration Association, Tiago Duarte is a recognised name in public law issues and is a former government legal advisor (his latest position in the public sector was as chief of staff of the deputy economy minister). He is recommended by Chambers Europe, Legal 500, PLC – Which Lawyer and Best Lawyer and has won twice the Client Choice Award from the International Law Office for best Portuguese public law lawyer. He is author of several books and articles on public law and international investment arbitration and is frequently asked to speak at conferences and lecture in master’s and other and academic courses in Portugal and abroad. He is also a regular presence in the Portuguese media. A graduate of the law faculty of Universidade de Lisboa (1995), with a PhD from the Universidade Nova law faculty (2005), Tiago Duarte is experienced as a lawyer, arbitrator and academic.
